Any time after four months is okay to start feeding your baby solids. However your baby may not be ready or need it. The later you begin solids the less chance your baby will have allergies. I didn't start my first son on solids until he was like 7 1/2 months. The other one was about 6 1/2 months. Rice cereal is a good solid to start with. Along with some veggies too. Don't start with fruit first because your baby might develop a sweet tooth. You should want your baby to like a variety of foods. Any don't forget to introduce each new food slowly, like a week at a time. That way if your baby does have an allergic reaction it will be easy to tell which food caused it.

General rule of thumb is to start your baby off with rice cereal at about 4 months, twice a day, for 2 weeks. After that, you can introduce the other types of cereal (none flavored yet). After the baby takes those (around 5 months) you can start them out on white fruits and yellow veggies (peras, bananas, applesauce, sweet potatoes, yams, etc). At 6 months, you can start to introduce green and orange veggies and other fruits. Studies have found that feeding your baby fruits first will NOT make them develop a sweet tooth. Some babies prefer the sweetness in the beginning, but with consistency, they will eat veggies as well. Also, when introducing a new baby food, feed them only one or two tablespoons a day of the same food for 2 days, and watch for allergic reactions. My son loves bananas and applesauce, but also eats veggies pretty good. This weekend I'm going to introduce the green veggies, so we'll see how that goes. Also, at 6 months, you can introduce juice (clear juices- apple, grape), but introduce them in a sippy cup as opposed to a bottle, and dilute it (half water, half juice). They can have 3 oz a day.

How about after they are born, you can start with breast milk or formula.
Then with the advice of your doctor, you can add a small amount of cereal to the bottle, not much as the digestive tract is still developing.
In a few months, you will be feeding strained baby food and about 1 yr. you might be on baby food with more solid food bits in it.
This is the time you will be introducing all kinds of food to the baby.

Newborn: Strictly formula/breastmilk
4-6 months: Introduce cereals
6 months: Vegetables and Fruits; Fruit juice (1:1 ration with water)
9 months: Meat
12 months: Dairy (whole milk), honey,
2 yrs: Switch Dairy to 2% or lowfat
**These are rough estimates and all babies are different**

Eating table food should be a supplement; the baby should still be receiving most of it's nutrition from formula/breastmilk (upto a year).

w/ all 4 of mine dr. said to start at 4 months but my grandmother mother of 5 herself said wait till 6 months so that is what i did. if you are breast feeding there really is no need to start foods till you stop. Foods to try are veggies do the same one for 3 or 4 days just to make baby doesnt have any ally's to it then move on.

The age is 6 months to start with rice cereals. Make sure you consult your doctor if you want to start any earlier. Infants digestive systems cannot handle foods much earlier than 6 months...and it is best to start with rice cereals.

I agree, you should start food at 4 months. Doctors say to start on rice cereal and then veggies, and then fruits. My son is almost 6 months and my doctor told us to make sure that we also give him lots of plain water.

Don't you have to feed the baby everyday once it is born? Breast milk I believe is the common food at the time.
