History's best minds have dwelt on questions of philosophy since the beginning of recorded time, and the fact that you ask the question suggests that you are willing to think carefully about things that require considerable thought and study to grasp well. You can read, beginning with Aristotle, of course, but if you want contemporary treatments, try tackling some terrific works such as The Road to Serfdom (F. von Hayek) and Economics in One Lesson (a deceptively brief book by Henry Hazlitt). The Dalai Lama's name has been associated with several books he presumably co-wrote with English-speaking writers (though his English is very good), and these are lovely treatments of Eastern philosophical ideas. There are obviously miles of books with "philosophy" in their titles, but one could begin and never end. Neither of the two I mentioned are sold as philosophical texts, but you will soon discover the connection between the philosophical bases of whatever disciplines you study, be they political or economic in subset. Stay away from trendy self-help approaches to serious subjects, only because they tend to soak up time in an often-trivial manner. (Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is an interesting work, but it's important to remember that she wrote it as a philosophical treatise, using fiction as the medium, and created each of the characters to embody a particular character trait, which is to say, if they appear exaggerated or caricaturish, it is what she intended. )
