this has happened to me.
The first time, we had to get a new xbox 360.

The second time, we were lucky.
Key was disconnecting the Hard drive and everything else, then reconnecting, for us.

Try the troubleshooting here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534

Here is what it says, but I recommend you visit the link, as it has access to further info if needed.

1.Follow these steps:
a. Turn the console off.
b. Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
c. Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
d. Firmly reconnect all the cables. Make sure that the Power Supply Unit is directly connected to the wall socket.
e. Turn on the console.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, go to step 2.
2.Examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red. If the power supply unit light is not green, follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
906101 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906101/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is red
906102 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is orange
906103 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906103/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is not illuminated
3.If you continue to experience this behavior, contact Xbox Customer Support.

This just happened to me last week. It basically means you have an internal error. You can try unplugging and reconnecting all of your cords, but it probably will NOT fix the problem. Three red lighst is defined as "Death" for the 360.

I got my 360 at Best Buy and got the 2 year warranty so they are sending me a $400 gift card to buy a new one. Obviously I couldn't wait that long so I already got another one and will use the gift card for other things.

Note: Make sure when you get a new 360 that you keep your current hard drive (assuming that is not causing the problem) and put it in your new one. All of your games saves and downloads are in your current hard drive and you'll want to keep them.

Another Note: Even if you cannot keep your old hard drive, everything you have downloaded can be downloaded again for free. It's not a big deal, but it'll take time. Game saves will be lost forever though.
