It;s prbably not the best environment for a child when they can really start to move and recognize, but it is always best to be with a mother, or mother figure, even if they are in jail, as long as they arent child molesters or murderers.

yes do it.

After all whos the most important person that gets hurt? The children. We all make mistakes. But why hirt the children?

I can honestly say it makes a different. My best friend got into a fight with another girl. The girl stabbed my friend in the neck and my friend grabbed the knife and stabbed her back, killing her.

I took her daughter every weekend to see her to keep that relationship that was most important. I can say that 6 years later her daughter shows no signs of other kids with parents in prison.

I started working with a program at that prison that keeps kids closer to parents. They have retreats, plays, author readings, weekend sleep overs, and a few other things including a room in the basement with walls seperating walls for a little privacy so familys can gather. so yes do it. Get involved any way you can.

Signs of other children:1. inadequate quality of care, mainly due to poverty;
2. lack of family support; and
3. enduring childhood trauma.[6]

Studies show that kids with incarcerated mothers are more likely to wet their beds, do poorly in school and refuse to eat[7]. Children with mothers in prison often experience financial hardship, the shame and social stigma that prison carries, loss of emotional support and fear for their mother's safety[8]. The effect on society is equally chilling: children with imprisoned parents are at increased risk for poor academic treatment, truancy, dropping out of school, gang involvement, early pregnancy, drug abuse and delinquency [9]. These at-risk youngsters are most often overlooked by mainstream children's advocates.

I think in some cases a mother should still be able to parent her children to as much an extent as the court system and prison system can manage.

But in some cases they should not. Like Andrea Yates, had she not gone praying mantis on ALL her kids, she certainly should not be allowed any contact with them from prison.

First and foremost we are all human and make mistakes...just because their freedom is taken from them as a consequence for a bad choice doesn't make them any less a Mother. I thinkthat it is important to keep mothering you children no matter where they are. If it is upsetting for the child to see their mother in prison, then make other contact, letters, phone internet etc...A women doesn't stop being a good Mother just because she is locked in a cell.
