There's several kinds of speed with regards to running. There's top speed, quickness, and burst. All of them require a combination of conditioning and technique. Your first goal will probably be to trim off body fat. You can be big and fast, but it's very hard to be fat and fast, so turn that fat into muscle ASAP.

Next you will want to condition your leg muscles, always remembering to stretch prior to any workout Leg presses and other work with weights is fine, but be aware this may improve your burst, but actually hinder your quickness. To improve your top speed you could do stairs which develop your calf muscles.

Ultimately, you will need to know the proper techniques for whatever position you decide to try out for. The sooner you make that choice, the better for your development as a player and a runner. Find out what drills that position typically is required to run in practice and start doing them. You will find that as your fat trims away and your leg muscles develop, the drills will actually become easier. Don't think that means you have mastered anything, stick with it. Repetition is the key. Practice, practice, practice.

Instead of running wind sprints, just try runnning past a house where a Doberman Pinscher lives a couple times a day...By God, you'll get faster...I guarantee it...I did accidentally a couple times when I was about 15 yrs old, and I'm pretty sure I set a world record the first time...just wasn't anybody around with a stop watch...the second time it happened is when I found out I had a jet engine in my @ss

I promise that if you listen to me, you will be faster:

1. Practice running down hill (to train your body to run faster)
2. Jump rope
3. Maintain a healthy diet (roughly 2500 calories a day for while and then you can consume 3000)
4. Practice running around a track by shag jogging the curves and sprinting the straight aways.

Run a lot. Sign up for track. Work on sprinting primarily and make a schedule. The key is to stick with it, or you will never get faster.

I run every morning at 5:30. It really helped me gain speed and resistance. I know its way to early for most people, but doesnt matter at what time you do it (its best to do it when ur stomach is empty, this is before breakfast). Just run for 30min to 1 hour, and pretty soon you'll get faster.

Speed is primarily a natural talent yet you can try to develop it further through technique. Try out for track and run, run, run...
