Well... every year, at Christmas, we wait for a night without rain (welcome to Portland, here's your mildew repellent). I put the top down on the Alfa and take the kids out, one at a time, to look at Christmas lights.
We bundle up against the cold and head out to the neighborhoods near home where the houses have been decorated the best. The crisp, brittle air stings our cheeks, and our bodies strain to feel warmth inside our layer upon layer of windproof clothing. The heat from the engine radiates up through the floorboards, and the throaty roar of the unencumbered exhaust sings as we ride the hills and curves of our part of town. A single silver sleigh bell, tied to the shift lever with a red silken cord, signals the shifts and changes of speed and direction, ringing its welcome to the season with every vibration of the suspension.
And the lights! Whole rows of stately maple trees turned into candy canes, red and white spirals climbing up their trunks as they march down the street! A house lighted to look like a gigantic toy train, the wheels "turning" as the lights flicker in sequence! Fences of flickering red and green separate us form animated reindeer, nodding and bobbing in the yard beyond. Polar bears, a handpainted plywood creche, a workshop staffed with robot elves, giant inflated snow globes -- all this, and more, are spread out before us, above us, around us. We don't drive past in detached comfort -- we swirl in and through the colors of Christmas, eyes welling with tears from the chill and ears stinging happily. We are part of what we pass through, not observers. We become Christmas, and Christmas becomes us.
