Most people are kind, warm-hearted folks. If this wasn't true, we wouldn't keep having more babies so there would be more like us! Caring for and about others does not bring misery or a feeling of being overwhelmed, just the opposite! I get peace and satisfaction from helping and being kind to others, even in small ways, to those I know and those I don't.

Realizing that it is completely unrealistic to worry about and try to care for every living thing on the planet does not make one cold-hearted. Your statement completely begs the question (bases the assertion on assumption).

I needed to stop worrying about everyone because it was too much for me, as it is for anyone else. Caring - that's different.

I disagree, we are not inherently cold-hearted. Perhaps we are, though, inherently practical, and realize we can't solve every problem.
