I wonder if people realize that under the old bowl system (pre BCS), Ohio St as Big 10 champ would have HAD to play USC as Pac 10 Champ in the Rose Bowl (so #1 vs #7) and Florida would have HAD to play in the Sugar Bowl, probably against Notre Dame (at large) or maybe Michigan. But they COULD NOT have played each other. The BCS was designed to have the top 2 teams play each other--that's it. We can argue all day about how #2 is determined, but under the old system, there is no Ohio St vs Florida OR Ohio St vs Michigan.

I will repeat--under the old bowl system, NO 1 would not have played NO 2 NO MATTER HOW NO 2 was determined or who deserved to be NO 2. The game literally would never have occurred.

another point--I liked the old bowl system because more bowl games had championship implications. I am just pointing out the fact that No1 could not have played No 2 under the old system.

I'm gonna give you major cudo's for this one. Everyone is complaining, but you're the first (I've heard) to make this point.

That's true. However in the old system you didn't have this big hoopla about who was #2 (and thus entitled to play in the so-called championship game). In the BCS, once they set #1 and #2 everyone else is frozen out, and as we've seen year in and year out, picking the #2 team is pretty slipshod no matter how they re-shuffle how the votes are compiled.
At least the old way it didn't matter too much who was #2 because, as you point out, #1 only rarely played #2 in a bowl game anyway. If the #1 team won then it made no difference who was #2, same as today. But if #1 lost its bowl game then the door was oftentimes wide open to the next few teams in the rankings. If the #2 team didn't win its bowl game convincingly or played a twinkie while the #3 team blew out a highly ranked opponent the latter could grab the championship or at worst share it.
The BCS has proven to be terrible at picking the #2 team and it compounds this by penalizing all the teams ranked #3 or below. At least the old system recognized that the rankings are at best guesses and gave everyone something of a chance.

The problem people are having isn't how the second team is determined, it is a problem of which team deserves to be number two. I agree that the old system was flawed but the new system is also flawed. The problem alot of people are having is how Florida moved up 70 points in the coaches poll and jumped from 4 to 2 in the coaches poll in one week. What that tells you is alot of people voting in that poll wanted either USC or Florida but not Michigan. If USC won, I'd be willing to bet that Florida would have remained in the 4th spot. There is something wrong with that.
All that said, I don't completely disagree with Florida playing for the national championship. They won the toughest conference and made a great case for the number two spot. I still think Michigan is the second best team in the nation. So, we did get a very good match up (two if you count Michigan/USC which will be a heck of a good game too), but it isn't the best and second best teams playing each other in my, or alot of other people's, opinion.

Of course. Ohio St would have gone to the Rose Bowl, and Florida would have gone to the Sugar Bowl.
So, that's one improvement of the BCS system to the traditional setup

the old system sucked, and the new system sucks even more. the bcs needs to stop being completely retarded and start listening to the colleges and make a playoff system. i swear that a dozen chimps could do a better job than the guys currently running the bcs

Very interesting. But it doesn't matter since the old bowl system is not in effect. I'm just glad UM isn't playing OSU again.

Until they put in a playoff system there will never be a true national champion.
