Yes. Alligators and crocodiles can sleep underwater. They have little slits on the sides of their heads that act as gills that permit them to breathe for very long periods of time underwater. They are amphibious as well as reptilian.

Crocs can go up to 30 minutes without air. They will regularly be in a docile state submerged in a depth so they can lift their nostrils out of the water for a few seconds, long enough to take a breath and then rest again. They can be seen sleeping out of the water, however they would only do this in an area where they feel safe and secure.

My opinion is that no they don't. They would drown. They can rest underwater but not sleep. They can probably stay submerged about 30 mins but not long enough to sleep.
They can almost certainly half-sleep like a dolphin or whale with just their nose above the water.

Well, i think they only sleep on land. As far as I know, crocs and alligators breath through their lungs and they would constantly come up to the surface to breath during their time in the water.

Well, They dont sleep for hours on end like we do, They rest a while and then come up for air. They dont sleep above ground for fear of preditors. not as if the alligators have much to worry about there! but that is the best i can do.

They keep their bodies submerged aprt from their protruding nostrils that can sit above the water line for them to breathe. So, yes, they are under water. It just their noses that aren't.
