I started to call my mom by her first name when I was teenager. If we were in public places and I tried to get her attention by saying "Mom", she wouldn't respond. But if I said her name, she'd look around right away. It just became a joke with us. I don't do it out of disrespect.

I've called my dad by his first name since I was 6 years old, but I've always called my mother 'mom' because it just seems right.

Probably because their parents encouraged them to do so???

I remember my mom saying to me (this was back in the early 80s) that, if I wished, I could call her by her first name.
I told her, that if SHE very much wanted me to, I would, just to please her, but I WOULD have a problem with it. (cuz to me she is my mom, and will always BE that)

I'm 54 now, and still call her "mom", feels good!!

I can't call my father "daddy" or something because my parents divorced when I was a child... I can't even pronounce that word aloud... it's deleted from my daily vocabulary somehow. So when I see him I call him by his name... I'm not trying to be rude or something, it's just that I can't...

They are being disrespectful to their parents. Or, the parents don't want to feel old.

They might be disrespectful or are more comfortable that way. I've always gone with Mommy and Dad.
