For anyone who works in TV or the media?

Question

Does anybody hire things like cameras and lights etc from facilities companies? would you prefer to hire from a person rather than a company. For people who own professional cameras etc would you ever consider renting out your kit to earn money when your not working???? This is just a thought that crossed my mind?

Television companies will quite often hire equipment from private companies for certain productions but,there are rules against using private individuals and their equipment,the reason for this is all down to insurance and union rules.
Most companies who hire out to TV and film production companies,have to have Public Liability Insurance and,because of the cost this puts most people off.
There would be a problem with renting out personal equipment as people in general do not look after rented items as much as they would if it was their own so it would be very risky.
