(BCS Final Rankings used here)
Well, they could not play either #3Michigan or #5 USC, because the Rose Bowl automatically takes the winners of the Pac 10 and Big 10 if neither conference winner is not playing in the National Championship Game. They could have played #6 Louisville but I believe the Orange Bowl had a pick before the Sugar so they grabbed Louisville. #7 Wisconsin couldn't go to a BCS bowl because the Big Ten already had two teams in BCS games. #8 Boise State's only BCS bowl option was the Fiesta since Boise is a western team and the Fiesta is in Arizona, and LSU would cream Boise. #9 Auburn wouldn't be an option because the SEC already had two Bcs teams. And #10 Oklahoma as winner of the Big 12 was obligated to play in the Fiesta Bowl.
So, LSU got #11 Notre Dame, and Notre Dame is GREAT for TV ratings across the country for all those Roman Catholic football fans.
It could have been worse, you could have gotten #14 Wake Forest, the ACC winner.

Amen, LSU guy.
I'm actually a Michigan fan specifically, but I follow every team in 1A college ball. I made my bowl picks for my school newspaper earlier today, and I expressed the same sentiments as you. It is appalling that Notre Dame is even in a BCS game after losing any moderately difficult game on their schedule, but I guess that's the benefit of having a national Catholic audience boosting TV ratings. On the other hand, LSU is the most underrated team in the nation, achieving the same record as USC through a staggering schedule. USC played nobody and lost twice. Where's the justice? Not in the choosing of the NC game, apparently. My Wolverines are without question better than the whiny Gators.
But I think there is one good aspect of the BCS system, and that is the excitement it brings to every down of the regular season. I'm not sure it's worth the unresolution at the end of the season, though.
So, I share your exasperation.
...maybe 1A football should forget about TV ratings and money, and form a playoff? Right...

LSU did not get screwed over. They lost two games, just like Notre Dame. The only reason LSU is ranked higher is because they lost their two games earlier in the season, while Notre Dame lost the previous week to USC.

It's the bowl system agreement.

Top 2 teams go to the BCS Game (OSU and Florida)

Since the Rose Bowl lost one of its customary players (Big 10 Champ OSU) they got first choice to face the Pac-10 Champ (USC)....the Rose Bowl is notorious for keeping tradition so they chose the other eligible Big 10 team, Michigan. The Sugar Bowl lost its usual player, SEC Champ Florida, so they chose another eligible SEC team: LSU. The Fiesta Bowl mandates a Big 12 Champion (OU) and the Orange Bowl mandates ACC Champ (Wake Forest).

The Fiesta Bowl is big into taking teams of excited fans, so Boise State was a no-brainer.

The Orange Bowl is huge on an east coast matchup, so they chose Louisville.

Notre Dame usually likes to play the highest ranking team it can, since the Rose Bowl got first pick on Michigan, it was decided that they would play LSU.

Complicated and political......but until they get a playoff it'll always be this way.

Umm...the point of the bowl game is to make the most money, and I completely agree. The whole point is to get teams that people will watch. That is why LSU is playing Nortre Dame, since a lot of people will watch ND just b/c it is ND

Yet there are other teams that are better than ND that aren't playing since they are not popular.

In the middle of fight between lsu fans :S

Doesnt matter who you play in the bowl game. As long as you win it shouldnt matter. In Notre Dames eyes maybe they got screwed over since they have to play a better team then they should. The rankings are all messed up anyway so just because its 11 v 5 doesnt mean that its really 11 v 5. Both of these teams can play like its 1 v 2. Any team can win on any given day.

It's hard to be sympathetic, when LSU gets basically a home game. They should have no problems in this game, since ND can't play defense at all.

well i understand that but the BCS is just pulling their leg Notre Dame lost to two of the better teams and the Rose Bowl is a traditional pac-10 vs. big 10 matchup
