A reporter.
You observe and present a story in written, audio or video form. You can be a freelance reporter and sell your stories, or you can work for a media outlet and go where they assign you.

Companies and organizations send press releases to journalists in the hopes that you will do a story on their event.

The word 'journalist' is changing pretty rapidly these days. The conventional job description is someone who works for a media outlet (radio, TV, newspaper, etc). They are assigned stories in conjunction with an editor and use interviewing and research to produce a story to inform the public.
In 2006, however, a journalist can pretty much be anyone. With things like blogs and wikipedia and this site, the word 'journalism' is expanding. The caveots of this are, in a word, accountability. Journalists have traditionally been accountable to their bosses and corporate owners, but now are increasingly only accountable to themselves.
Beware of what you read. No information is final. The truth is nebulous.
