I'm surprising my husband with a vacation to the Florida Keys, a spot he's always wanted to visit. Is it best to stay in the "historic" areas, or regular condos? Also, would it be best to fly to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and drive or just fly straight in to the Keys? Any other spots to see while there?

Fly into Ft Lauderdale..this is a medium sized airport and much easier to get around. Then rent a convertable and drive the highway 1 to Key West.

Once there, stay downtown..the crown plaza is a great hotel if money is no object. It's located on Duval street and a walking distance to the shops and bars.

Also check into other fun things like the day trips and dinner cruises, very fun.

fly to Miami and drive, its not a bad drive and not too long..don't stay right in key west, stay a few keys up...make sure you go to the pier for the sunset festivals, the bagpipe player if he is still there is the cutest guy around...make sure you go to sloppy joes and margaritaville..we've been there twice and once stayed right along the beach at what was the marriot casa marina resort, which was nice and the last time a best western close to the airport, avoid doing that...first time we went we didn't bother renting a car,we flew right to key west and figured we could take the trolley or a cab...well we went walking one night and ended up in some part of town called bahama village, not the best area to be in...we were on our honeymoon, married for 3 days at the time...we figured since it was an island all we had to do was keep right and we would get back to where we started,we did and the concierge at the hotel nearly had a heart attack when we told him where we ended up...he rented us a car the next day

it depends what you're into-my husband and i just went down for a week for our anniversary, and we didn't even make it to key west. too dirty and too many drunks for me, but if you've never been there you may want to check out some of the historic sites and famous bars. you should definitely drive down. even though it takes a while, the scenery is awesome, and there are tons of places you can just pull off the side of the road and go swimming. personally, we like animals so we went to theater of the sea in islamorada to see the dolphins, and the turtle hospital in marathon. also went snorkeling and kayaking, there are tons of places to do this on all the keys.
as far as where to stay, just depends on what you want to do. there are resorts and condos all up and down the keys, but generally the farther away from key west the cheaper it is. enjoy
