As in, if you have the laptop on and you close the screen, does that affect the performance of the laptop?

nothing happens to it, if you have it set as the screen to turn it self on when you close it then it will and when you open it, it'll turn back on, nothing will happen

The answer depends on whether you use the features of power management on the laptop. I am assuming you are using a version of Windows. I do not recall the exact default configurations, but if you are running on battery power, generally a laptop will hibernate. This means that it essentially saves your place (like a bookmark in a book) and turns off the machine. When you open it back up (and you may have to press the power button), the system will load itself back to the point that you left. Another poster was correct and your network connections would have been severed but that's because you're essentially turning off your system to save battery power. In other cases, the system may go into a suspend mode, usually when you are running on AC power. Suspend will turn off non-essential items like the display, networking card, etc. It will consume just enough power to keep the system going. You can alter the defaults by adjusting your Power Options through the Control Panel in Windows. Take a look at both the Power Schemes and Advanced settings.

Again, depending on the selected option, the performance will either drop to zero (hibernating) or stay the same.

I assume you're asking because you have an external monitor on it...right?

Just make sure that you turn off hibernation and sleep, and there should be no hit on performance.

Sometimes it turns off extra things such as the wireless or lan card, so a downside may be that your downloads stop when you close it.
