I recently had a 4 month old baby and I want to get a part time job to help pay the bills. I like the idea of serving 1 weekend a month but I read somewhere that I could be sent out of the country to serve. I would not be willing to join if I had to leave the country. I want to serve my local community or state. THANKS

If you enlist with the National Guard, there is a likelihood that you will find yourself in Iraq or Afghanistan.

If you join the National Guard, you commit to protect the US Constitution just like any of the other armed services. Many National Guard units are serving overseas because our country is at war and needs more trained troops. In peacetime, the National Guard is used to help protect local and state interests and is directed by each state's Governor.

I would suggest you take criminal justice courses at the community college and aim for working for a local law enforcement agency if you don't want to risk being shipped out of the country.

There are many other options for working part time to help pay the bills. Consider job sharing with someone at your town's government office. There are lots of ways to serve your local community or state, such as the road commission, police dispatcher, paramedic, gift shop worker at your local hospital, etc. Some creativity combined with knowledge of your abilities and talents will produce just the right niche for you!

Good luck!

Haven't been following the news, have you? If you join the NG, it's HIGHLY probably that you wil be sent out of the country to serve- probably in Iraq.

There are other options if you just want to serve your country and make some money part-time... especially with that baby to consider.

Try this link. It's not the government but you may get ideas that can still help your family out.

Good luck.

Mostly likely you would. If you wanted to slim the chances of you being deployed, you should join the Air National Guard instead. I was in the Air Force Reserves for almost 5 years. Never deployed. There's still no guarantee that you won't be activated, but in the National Guard or Army Reserves the risk is higher.

There is a chance you would be sent out. However they will more than likely send out the Reserves first. But yes there is a chance that you will be sent out.
