Are you talking about ajax the cleaner? or are you talking about Asynchronous JavaScript and XML? or yes I forgot the greek hero :P
Ajax the hero: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(mythology)
Ajax the cleaner is well a cleaning product http://www.cleansweepsupply.com/pages/skugroup1068.html
but the other is a nice mix of javascript and XML
it allows you to put dynamic content on a page without a refresh or post. Using javascript you can grab any number of variables or information and then either send a post or get to another webpage and return the data, usually xml, without refreshing the page. There are several books on it. but wiki has a good definition.

AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript and XML. It is a web developer technique that enables application-like web pages. One characteristic is that data loads on clicks rather than loading all at once when the web page is opened. This is the asynchronous part. Javascript is used provide interactivity and XML is how data is transmitted.
