why cant elected officals act on they're own behalf, follow they're own ideas, instead of being classified as a democrate or republican. sounds like a college faternaty to me and that grouping may be what causes a lot of problems in our legal system.

The ideas of parties in politics is not new and is definitely not just implemented in the USA. Parties exist because it provides financial support and has more power than if everybody worked as individuals. If every politician worked for the benefit of themselves, nothing would get done and campaigning would be more difficult. They would have less resources and their proposals would not be as easily voted on. But these politicians are asked by the party leaders that if they get support from that party then they must support their party's platforms and vote accordingly. When trying to understand political parties, try thinking of over privileged gangs with too much power.

you're right. the political system is set up to get incumbants re-elected. If you go outside of the political partys, you have very little chance of winning. There have only been a few independents in federal office ever. The parties like it that way. Lieberman got in as an independent this year, but will vote with the democrats even though they totally abandoned him during the campaign. That how strong the political partys are. I agree, it's bad for the country.

People are stronger if they have groups behind them to support them than if they are on there own. The intended government of our Forefathers never meant for there to be political parties. People just started grouping together based on similar views, and just gave themselves names. It was more like a natural thing. It's human nature to put things into groups and label them.
