Slugs and snails sometimes come indoors during the Autumn , they LURK in hidden, slightly damp places .. ie under the sink , or under the bath , and sometimes go for a wander ,at night .
MY remedy :
This may sound cruel to a slug lover
so look away, if you are a bit squeamish ;
sprinkle fine table salt
on and around the carpet where the tracks appear.
You will find the culprits in the morning
Dead in their tracks ( pun sorry)
hoover the salt up !
another thing you can do,
is set up a slug pub ;
Half fill a container, with beer or lager ( jam jar will do)
put it on the floor, near a wall ,
where it is not accidentaly knocked over .
slugs and snails love beer
They will come miles to get , into the jars (pub)
to have a drink , and maybe play darts ,
They will drown:( as they will not be able to get out again .)
but they will be very happy slugs, even while drowning !!!
I hope that will solve your problem and the .mystery

I've heard, from some very reliable sources (i.e. those who've had the same problem and conquered the little buggers) that putting dishes of beer out will attract them, and the fall in and can't get out again. No kidding...he's tried it..he put the dishes near any opening, and no more slugs in the house. There's something about the yeast that attracts them, and sadly, they drown. (But, it's not a bad way to go) Of course, you'll have to beat off the town drunk with a large, heavy object.

the trails can be from slugs and snails. My father used to get them in his bedroom. they had to scale 30ft then crawl through the window, across the carpet and sometimes over the blanket. We never found the critters because in all liklihood, their fluids would have dried up so badly they shrivel and die under something or dark corner and you probably wouldnt recognise what it was anymore, unless it was a snail then you'd see the shell.

Can't you just follow the slug trails? surely at one end you will find a slug, and at the other end you will find the gap which they are coming in through.

I never heard of any such thing. Where do you live? I mean I have seen them outside in the summertime where I live in Maryland, but never in my house.

You probably don't know where they are coming from. Stay up all night and watch them, then you will see what they are up to.
