I had my son at 7 months... and the doctor told me to get him to gain weight. It's actually good that he has gained 1 lb. Hes still little... very little. Just keep doing what you are doing. It's also really good that he is eating. I would say you are doing a great job and doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. Don't worry about him being overweight..especially not now! He needs the nutrients. He will grow into his own stature once he gets a little older.. around 9 - 12 months babies start to thin out. Good luck to you

It is unlikely that anyone here is a nurse or a doctor in a neonatal intensive care, so we probably aren't the best people to be asking this question. When you are at the hospital with your son, ask the nurses who are caring for him. When you are not with him, keep a notebook with you so that you can write down questions to ask when you get there. Perhaps you were further along than 5 months as 3 pounds for a preemie that early is quite large. Some friends of ours just had their twins prematurely, she was 28 weeks pregnant. The babies weighed 2 pounds 10 ounces and 2 pounds 3 ounces. I would think that weight gain would be a good sign that he is getting stronger, healthier, and closer to that great day when you will be able to take him home. Especially if you are pumping your milk to feed him, he is probably going to do just fine. But, please check with the health care professionals who are caring for your precious little one.

Thats probably a good sign that he is gaining weight. Maybe if you had carried him to term you'd have had a BIG baby boy! My son measured at 8 lbs when I was about 7 1/2 months....he ended up being 10 lbs 1oz....good luck!!!

he needs to gain a lot of weight as soon as possible so he can be out of the hospital unless he has got other complications that I hope he hasn't. I know about this cause my husband is a gyn/obs.

Awwww congrats on your sweetie pie!!
No...no worries. His weight gain is fine because babies regulate their own nutrition (meaning they eat as much as they need). He is growing well and is healthy. Good for him! You should be proud.
