(Did someone actually say that 27 + 1 = 29??)
7x - 1 = 27
+1 to both sides
7x = 28
Divide both sides by 7
x = 4

=4
You had to move the -1 over to the 27 and make that -1 a positive one. Now all you have to work with was dividing 7/28 which =4.

Ani got the procedure right, she just added wrong.
Remember we're solving for "x", so we have to "undo" anything on the side of the equasion with "X" to get it all by itself. And we have to do that in the inverse order of operations (subtraction and addition come before multiplication and division, which come before, say, taking square roots of things). And remember. to Isolate "x" you have to do the same thing on both side of the equasion
7x-1=27
+1=+1 (this gets rid of the "-1" on the lefthand side)
7x=28
28 divide by 7 (this gets rid of the "7" on the lefthand side)
is 4!
