My 18 month old son was bitten on the upper lip by our dachshund today (12/5/06). There are 2 slits on the skin above the lip forming a Y shape. There is also a Triangle shaped tear on the pink of the lip. The skin is slightly raised, separating from the lip. It is not bad enough for stitches, but I do not want him to have a very noticable scar on his lip since he is still young. It is hard for me to keep him from touching it. What should I do?

Vitamin E gel from Vitamins, You can cut them open to get the gel, and it is safe, it will reduce scarring, and is not dangerous.

I am sure that if the child was bitten by a family pet that the pet has had it's rabies shots but then again, there is no certainty that the shot was a viable one as it has happened that some rabies shots given were found to be of no good and the animal had to be revaccinated . . hopefully this is not the case.
Be sure to watch the dog for the next few days to determine if there is reason for concern.
I would assume that if the child is 18 months he is current on his tetnus shots as well.
You might want to go to the Pharmacy and get some Steri Strips or Butterflies.
These are pieces of tape designed to hold skin together that either does not require sutures or is almost healed and the sutures have been removed and are applied as a safe guard.
You could even get some Liquid Skin. This will help keep the skin closed even though the child does mess with it.
Some of the raised skin is probably from swelling so use some ice on the lip.
Whether you use Steri Strips,Butterflies or Liquid Skin you will probably be able to apply them after the child has gone to sleep. . . if you are tender with your touch.
If you can't do this with the child asleep, you may need to wrap him up with a blanket.(This will take 2 adults)
Place in on the blanket so that only his head is above the edge of the blanket.
Keep his arms to the side and wrap him like a Papoose(needs to be snug),one flap of the blanket snug up to the body and the other wrapped around over the first flap and completely over to the back of the child.

First , kill the dog. Second, don't let your baby near any animals YOU don't know. Third, try to take better care of your child. Fourth, time will take care of that scar unless you didn't seek medical attention in which case it could get infected etc, then you won't have to worry about it. Fifth, see number the third.
