what does gong show mean?

Like when people say, "It was such a gong show" etc.

It's an old game show I belive from the late 70s or early 80s. People would do some kind of act on stage and if they were bad the host would hit a big gong. It meant they sucked and needed to get off the stage.

I remember this on the television years ago. It was like a talent contest. If you were no good, they banged a gong, and you had to get off the stage.
