I don't know the answer to this, but I just wanted to tell you it's questions like this that make me love this site so much. Questions that make me go "yeah, WHY is that?"

I've always kind of assumed that the small bits of lint (which are not large expanses of whatever color they are) just kind of blend together and come out gray. Things like jeans blend with things like white sweaters and towels and create gray. Black is all the colors combined, so gray is probably just a lighter version of that principle.

My laundry doesn't tend to produce a lot of gray lint because I don't have a lot of blue clothing or other items. I tend to get white lint. A family member who wears jeans gets the gray lint.

because that is the natural color of fiber? Sometimes we will see red, as that is a color that bleeds easily.

it is also signs of a dryer that needs to be cleaned(duct)
