Audiogirl,

Preference depends on the reason for buying the computer - why do you need the computer, what is your application.

1. If you want to process pictures, create DVDs, use PC for playing music or DVD - you need Desktop with large RAM and hard drive.

2. If you travel or study and want to take computer with you, you need a laptop.

In any case if you want to use laptop extensively you will need an external monitor and a regular keyboard.

For same memory, Hard drive and CPU speed, Laptops are expensive.

Laptops are more expensive because of manufacturing cost and high end heat resistant chip sets.

If you don't have to carry your computer with you and don't want to use computer on bed, I suggest buy a desktop.

Which is more preferable is entirely up to the individual - personally I have both ;) If you never leave your desk, a laptop would be excessive. If you are never at your desk, a desktop machine would be a little pointless. Judge for yourself.

Laptops are more expensive because the components need to be more specialist - they have to be compact, yet still run at a cool temperatures. Because of this they are more expensive to manufacture. Also consider that the components aren't as easy to replace as with a desktop computer, so they need to last a little longer. Yes, I am implying that component companies make their desktop components on the cheap knowing that they won't last as long - that's business!

Laptops are generally more expensive because you are paying for the smaller compact parts in a laptop. Everything in a laptop needs to be smaller and compact. The parts also need to more durable because they laptop will be moved around. The components also need to consume less power because laptops use battery power.

The preference between a laptop and a desktop all depends on how you plan to use it. If you don't need the portability to use it in various locations then the desktop is more attractive. You can certainly get more computer power and features for less money in a desktop. However, if you need to use your computer in various location or travelling then the laptop allows you to do that.

Hi,

If your work includes traveling a lot, get a laptop.
If you want a high end multimedia device with all the latest geeky things pumped into it, get a desktop.

Overall, a laptop can satisfy most requirements but geeks still prefer desktops.

That would be entirely up to the user! I can however tell you that a desktop is far easier to maintain and get parts for! A lot cheaper when it comes to repairs too!

I like laptops better. They are more expensive because they are in higher demand since they are mobile. I know there are USBs which can carry your data and makes your data mobile, but if your in a room without a PC to put it in, then the USB doesn't help. (Conference rooms.)
