Who says the number of religious people has gone up?

Actually it's going down and has been since the 70's. If you go to any church in your city, they'll have tons and tons of services for their parishioners -- food drives, Christian singles parties, child care, marriage counseling, etc. etc. etc. -- and the reason is because they're having trouble attracting new members. More and more people describe themselves as "spiritual, not religious" or "Christian -- nondenominational" when asked what their religion is in surveys and fewer and fewer people go to church on Sunday even if they are Christian.

However, it probably does seem like America is more religious. Our president is a fundamentalist Christian who got elected because of support from fundamentalist Christians. Issues like abortion, gay marriage, displaying the Ten Commandments in schools, teaching evolution, abstinence, etc etc are divisive issues. The reason for that is because Christians vote in large numbers, so politicians cater to their political interests (or pretend to anyway). Politicians pay attention to voters, not the American people at large. Since most people of voting age don't vote, they aren't heard. Incidentally, many of these people aren't religious.

It is not so much that anything has increased in the past couple of years......

It is that the information explosion has catapulted everything into the limelight......

With internet becoming easier to get, and faster to access.... simply everyone is getting online now. There are some countries; notably China and much of the Middle East that has nationally controlled firewalls set at the main trunking lines. They try to limit what their people can see and what sites they can go to.

There aren't any more religious people than there were before..... there are just more of them online and in the news. Which is kinda the same thing..... since getting on the news these days is also easier online than anywhere else.

Do you mean in America? Could it possily be because of a rise in patriotism? I mean, because of the war in Iraq people are becoming a lot more patriotic and patriotism simulates a feeling of us against them, them being the Islamic people of the middle east. Well, if it's us against them then wouldn't we have to be Christians to be part of the "us"? Then again, this is just a guess on my part in a sad attempt to answer your question and there are a million other possiblities, like an increase of "miracles" that could also be causing this. This was just the first one that popped into my mind :P

I think it has become fashionable, and sheep that many of us are, we jump on the bandwagon.

I know a whole lot of religious people who use birth control. As far as I know, only the Catholic church says it is wrong and that does not mean that all catholics think so.

Instability in there lives. Religion provides hope, commonality, security. Unfortunately many people turn to religion as a crutch without actually securing any sort of faith in the religion they profess to adhere to.

September 11th, the increase of technology, and a more hectic society where culture and tradition are blurred.

All these things, in my view, have caused fear, and fear tend to cause people to turn to religion.

Just my view. Hope it helps.

Because tragedies can remind people of their own mortality, which makes them want to find meaning in life and an answer to what happens when you die.
