Thats the smell of burning bakolite - Either get an Electrician to examine the wiring, or if you know what you are doing, turn off the mains (lighting circuit) and have a look at the wires that go into the light switch, the light rose in the ceiling and the light fitting. Look for scorch marks in the bakolite fittings and at the very least replace the scorched ones - do it soon as it is a fire risk!

hi I've had this problem myself! believe it or not. take off your shade and take out your light bulb, then unscrew the plastic screw bit that would normally be screwed up to hold on a lamp shade, this piece is your culprit! as someone else has said about plastic fittings of today used to be made from fish bones, this piece is getting to hot causing that soooo annoying horrible smell! leave this piece off and put bulb back in, leave it to see if there is any improvement.you should find that this will do the trick.i just then replaced the fitting with a new one. problem solved!!!!

Sometime you get this with electrical fitting getting hot. Old fittings were often made of fish bone before plastics were widely used, but you also get the smell from ozone produced by arcing on bad connections. It's probably an indicator of old or poor wiring so check it is okay!

There's a haddock in the bulb...?...He has Light Acctivated Fish Odour Syndrome...?...Its just YOU...?...He has Eau de Halibut dabbed daintily on the bulb, increasing the aroma as it heats...?...His Nan threw her tights, in gay abandon, in a reckless act of passion towards the ceiling...?...There's a "presence" in the room named Marcel Mackerel...?

Could be that your friend is using the wrong wattage light bulb.

In most pendant light fittings the recommended Max wattage is 60w.

Get him to check and change if necessary.

Rich is right, its the bakerlite fitting that is getting hot - if you leave it long enough and if you are lucky it will just blow a fuse .. if you are unlucky it will start a fire .... that is unless .... someone DID throw a fish up there ;-)

It means the wiring is dodgy so call an electrician.
