Preston North End won the first league championship (1888-89) and became the first club to achieve the 'double' of winning the FA Cup (1889, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0) and the Football League championship in the same season. This double was even more extraordinary in that the league was won without a single defeat, a feat which would not be repeated in the top division until 2003-04 (by Arsenal). Equally impressive was that the cup was won without conceding a single goal.

Preston North End were first in 1889 (the first ever year of the Football League and the 18th FA Cup), followed by Aston Villa in 1897.
Tottenham Hotspur (1961), Arsenal (1971, 1998, 2002), Liverpool (1986) and Manchester United (1994, 1996, 1999) are the only other clubs to have achieved the feat
Man Utd became the first team to complete it twice in 1996, followed by Arsenal in 1998.
United wrestled it back the following year (their treble winning season of 1998/99, as if it needed mentioning again) only for Arsenal to equal the record again in 2002.
It was won as many times (five) in an eight year spell between 1994 and 2002 as it had been in the previous 105 years!
