About five years ago, I was at the absolute bottom. I quit my job because I just couldn't cope anymore. I had major depression, I was taking smack and watching television all day. The only time I got up off the couch was to buy ice cream or more drugs. My psychiatrist helped to get me on the pension and into public housing, so I didn't have to worry too much about money. After a relatively short time on a methadone maintenance program, I decided it was time to do something useful. I was totally unemployable so I got into voluntary work. This led me to a community radio station, and now I am the producer of my own show. I even won a national award this year. Yeah, I'm still broke, and I drink too much. And I'm still on medication. But I have so many reasons to get out of bed everyday. So, life can get better.

This may not be of help to you ... but this is what always worked for me. I imagined eternity .... and realized that what I was going through at that moment was really like the blink of an eye. I realized there is a certain amount of turmoil that comes into one life, and no more ... and the sooner you go through it, can check it off the list, the shorter that list of turmoil becomes. I tried to "live in the moment" .... that *very* moment in time, rather than being depressed about something that had just happened, or worrying about what I perceived was ahead. It didn't necessarily make me bubble over with glee, but it gave me the strength to get past the turmoil.

ME. What helped?
Friends, God, creative pursuits (poetry, crafts, art), and meds.
Believing in myself and being true to myself.
Learning whose opinions to listen to, and whose to ignore.
Deciding I was valuable, and cultivating my dreams.
Asking for help when I needed it.
