It is bugging me, i just whatched it the other day and i have been wondering ever since.

In the movie she's his sister but I'm pretty sure she is a representation of his daughter Haley, he just didn't want to come right out and say that it was a movie about his life.

The age difference would suggest that she must be his sister, but the lack of motherly affection from Kim Bassinger's character coupled with the overt affection and even adoration shown by Mr. Mather's character suggest a father/daughter relationship, so I think they (the film-makers) wanted you to wonder about it and you did. It was a great film cleverly made, even for those who don't especially enjoy rap music or the hip-hop lifestyle.
