The reason the Penny is not abolished is because their lobby groups that support the penny for symbolic purposes. Yes, a penny is impractical for purchases in today's marketplace. Yet, in a free country the penny lobby has as many rights as the Big Pharma lobby. Abolishing the penny would make logical sense, but you many make the copper, coin, machine industry very upset. Coin exchange machines lobby would be mad too???

It makes no sense to abolish a penny. It would make everything more expensive because prices would be rounded up to the next nickel.
