It has no usb to it but would you know what the connections at the rear would work on ie printer etc please

Sounds like you have bought a really old laptop there
Usb came out in about 1997-98
looks like hes also got NT4 installed
eep........
can't find an online manual for this model (or even a picture)
most likely the rear connectors are
Parallel printer port
Serial port
keyb/mouse socket
Power socket
Networking port (maybe)
Modem socket (maybe)
Audio sockets (maybe)

well, I would, for the printer, use the parallel port:

There must be a USB in the back, all computers have them. Look carefully.
