I think a 6 string would be your best bet. Musician's Friend has a myriad of guitars in all price ranges and will probably give you the best price on the guitar you pick, but you might want to first visit your local guitar store and test out guitars in your price range, and find one that plays well and sounds great (to you). The best advice I have gotten is that it doesn't matter if you get an inexpensive or pricey one, it should be easy to play and sound sweet to YOUR ears, one that you will enjoy playing and look forward to picking up and playing everyday. If you find one that you love, but is out of your price range, you might want to save up and get it instead of settling for something that you really don't like, but is affordable.
BTW, I did purchase an inexpensive Applause from Muscian's Friend that I absolutely love. It arrived in perfect condition. I wouldn't recommend an Ovation or Applause only because the body shape makes it difficult to keep it from sliding off your lap. Good luck on your search, and I hope you enjoy learning the guitar.

If you're looking for a cheap guitar, Wal*Mart has a few up in the front of the store. You can buy used guitars in excellent shape for cheap, too. I can promise you that any local instrument store will sell guitars.
Most guitars have six strings. Guitars with more than that can be very pricey and are harder to find.

there are 6 strings on guitars (generally, there are very few exceptions)
i have a Gibson Concert Acoustic, and its really good. Gibsons are good guitars.
if youre looking for a good (but some can be pricey) go for Gibsons or Fenders

A six string Alvarez is a good choiice. You can buy a one used reasonably. Personally, electric is the way to go. Far easier on your fingers, so you are more likely to keep up with it.

Like electric a standard acoustic has 6 strings. There is of course the 12 string but don't worry about that.
