I don't mean police or FBI or background checking - just finding out more about my kids' friends' parents, neighborhood, activities, family life, etc. My kids would not have to know I'm doing it, but it would be ok if they know.

Parents should not let their children date until they're 40 years old or older.

It is very important for parents to know who their children are hanging out with and what they are doing and where they are! Young people are very much influenced by their peers especially when they become infatuated with some one. To what extent parents should check out the boyfriend/girlfriend could depend. If a parent notices a marked change in their child's behavior when they are with ANY friend, it may be a good idea to find out what kind of person they are hanging out with whether it is a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship or just another person they are hanging out with. It is better to seem like an over protective parent than to seem disinterested.

it depends on muturity andas for 13-16 as much as possible because even though the teen might not like it its good for parents to know about who the son or daughter is hanging out with for. young tens also think of going out as somthin totally diff. then what it really is 16- whatever, parents should lay off a little and trust there kids but meet the bf/gf at least 1 time

I think it's very important for the parrent to know a little about the person their child is dating. A good idea might be to meet that person's parrents and get to know them and their child. Maybe invite the person or the whole family to have a dinner a time or two. I think it's good for the parrent to know what kind of person their child is dateing but without getting into their business 'too' much.

Anything short of a full-on investigation and a backround check is probably going to be fine.

After they have been dating for awhile, inviting said individual over for dinner every once in awhile would be nice. If your son/daughter is serious about this person, they will be fine to have this person over every once in awhile to hang out. If they never bring him/her around, do not mention them, and you never even lay eyes on them is probably a signal that there is something about this person you would not approve of.

I think it would just be nice to know this person, their basic likes and dislikes, and their goals.

I wouldn't check on them, thats lack of trust, and you can really screw up your relationship with your child. Trust them to tell you, or ask them. But do not go behind their back, thats not right. If you have heard form other people that your child is in a sticky situation, bring it to their attention, and if they refuse to admit to it, then ask a friend to watch out for them, and if to let you know if there is anything you need to get involved in.

They should a lot! The person may be totally cool around you , but a total jerk afterward. Check on your children!

Never, in my perspective, but once in a while to be safe. Do kids ask their parents who they're dating?

I would say that it doesn't really matter.
So long as you don't start acting like the Godfather.
