ice for 20 mins, stretch your legs, esp the tendons in your shin and calve, then do a gentle message starting at the bottom by your ankles and working up towards your heart. Next time make sure to stretch more and try to avoid hard floors for running and stuff... although I know its sometimes unavoidable.

Shin splints are caused when the tendons attached to tibia, the bone in the front part of the lower leg, become separated or partially separated from the bone. It is painful usually under the knee cap, and can make you feel as if the kneecap itself is coming off. The front of the lower leg is usually very tender to touch, and slightly warm or swollen feeling. The cure is to rest the leg and apply heat to aid the healing and reattachment of the tendons. If you do not rest the leg, the tearing will continue and the pain will become unbearable when you walk, and you become a risk for stress fractures. You should not be running at all if this is your problem. You can take Ibuprofen for the discomfort, but that's about all that can be done. A visit to the doctor is in order to have it completely evaluated and see what he recommends otherwise. Meantime, you really need to quit running until you have it checked and are healed. Your coach should already know this and should have told you.

i am a dancer and when i first started doing pointe (stand on my toe shoes) my calves were stronger than my quads so it caused my shins to "split" so i went to a trainer and i just had to be on crutches and stay off of my leg for about a week and app;ly hot packs to it everynight when i wasn't at school!
