Being a lawyer takes a lot of hard work and time. After you pass the necessary exams and get practicing, the real time investment begins.

I'm assuming you live in the U.S. - if not, this info might not apply.

You need a bachelor's degree first, but it can be in any subject. I'm starting law school next fall, and my bachelor's is in linguistics. As far as grades go, do the best you possibly can. Law schools are very competitive. If you want to go to a good law school, you need really good grades.

You will also have to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) during your last year of undergraduate school. Start studying for the LSAT as soon as you possibly can. There are prep courses out there, but they are expensive. I just studied by myself from books and my score was in the 97% percentile (but you should know what approach to studying works best for you).

As far as what type of knowledge you need - they don't expect you to have any advanced knowledge of law before you begin law school. You should probably have a fairly good understanding of the way the government works though.

You should do quite a bit of research on law schools before deciding where to go. A good place to start is the rankings that come out every year in U.S. News and World Report.
