The best book to read is the Bible, because it is God's Word and tells us how to live in this life and how to achieve salvation for the next life. (I prefer either the NIV or the NASB.)

However, assuming you are asking for a book written in modern times, then I highly recommend "Boundaries" by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. This is non-fiction, and it is a book which can help you in dealing with others in any type of relationship (personal, work, etc.). I really learned a lot from it and what I've learned will serve me well for the rest of my life.

Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. When his best friend, a young clergyman, is killed in a mockery of a duel by an arrogant noble, just to quiet his eloquent expressions of democratic ideals, Andre-Louis Moreau vows revenge.
