Well Henry,

If it isn't a head gasket it soon will be. Do not try to drive the car until you solve the problem!

First check the thermostat. Thats simple to do and a $20 fix depending who does it. If the thermostat is frozen replace it and see if the engine runs without overheating... In a pinch, simply remove it to perfom the next checks. Close it up, put on a new hose, start up the car (with full radiator) let it warm up and check the radiator to see if exhaust gases (not just steam) are coming out when you remove the radiator cap (or leave the cap off while you run it. If not, then consider yourself VERY lucky. Drive the care easily for a few days, checking it at least twice a day. (Put the thermostat back in if you left it out)

If you have exhaust gases (or that white goo on the dipstick that someone else mentioned), then you are not as lucky.

You will then have (at best) a blown head gasket (from overheating due to something) and possibly:
a) A cracked block (new engine time)
b) Blown, cracked, or warped head (new or remachining heads)
c) Chipped or ruined valve(s)...valve job and heads (?)

Not a pretty sight.....

good luck and best wishes on that thermostat....

Well, i have read all the other answers...not at all correct....the hose may have blown off because it's a bad hose...if the thermostat is not opening allowing the antifreeze to flow once it hits 190 degrees it will cause the engine to overheat...head gasket is bad you'll have a huge white cloud coming out thew tailpipe when the engine is running..that's antifreeze burning. Hoses should be changed every 6000 miles...good luck

This is a head gasket. The water pump doesn't create enough pressure to blow the hose off. It's compression from a combustion chamber. Might be a cracked head. You'll have to take the head off and look it over. Good luck.

sounds like to me that your top hose could possibly be clogged or kinked... Check the hose for any creases, and uncrease if possible.. Check your oil, if you are losing antifreze , it could be going into the oil pan, from a bad head gasket.. Also you might want to check for any visible leaks under the car... Then again with the cap being cold, you might want to look into checking the water pump, could be busted and just not moving the antifreze, good luck....

you have a locked up thermostat, and need to have it replaced before you blow the engine
