Back when the movie came out, Salon.com did an awesome article called "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Memento". I thought I had understood everything after watching it a few times, but this guy caught all kinds of things I didn't catch.

This is the article:
http://archive.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/06/28/memento_analysis/index.html

It's Salon.com, so to read the whole thing you have to watch an ad, but it's not too bad, and this article is truly excellent.

There's also a great site called "Understanding Memento":
http://www.christophernolan.net/memento_un.php

Those two sites alone should have all the information you need.

(I took the time and care to respond to your question thoughtfully. If it was the best answer, please take the time and care to mark it so.)

The movie runs backwards in time and is disjointed in order to help the viewer empathize with the main character's memory loss. Each tatoo that he has done serves as a memory aid or memento that will give him guidence through his disjointed life. His general sense of curiosity propels him through the story- This is a symbol of man's overwhelming need to understand who he is and where he fits in society.

The movie is supposed to be confusing and requires that you pay attention the whole time, which a lot of people cannot do. That's why I watched it more than once. Good luck with your report.

If I recall correctly, the color scenes are in reverse order (to give the audience the same absence of memory as the main character) while the b/w scenes are in regular order. I think the b/w part either happens after all the color scenes or before. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly.

I hear there was a DVD edition that included the option of seeing the scenes in their natural order.
