There are always the cliche mom hobbies: sewing, knitting, baking, cleaning (?), ect. I'm guessing that you're already aware of those, and looking for something different. My mom picked up a hobby that was actually pretty useful. She would go and buy old furniture at garage sales (we lived on a military base, so this was easy as people were often moving) like dressers, night stands, even an old school desk. She'd take them home, strip off all of the paint/stain, sand them down and refinish them. Both I and my sister's first set of furniture for our bedrooms were refinished by my mother. She could turn a very unattractive and beat up dresser into a nice piece of furniture. It all depends on what you like to do and what things you're good at. Playing around with electronics can be fun, converting old appliances for new uses. Photography, but if you don't have a decent camera it has a high start up cost. Gardening is another cliche, I think, but it's rewarding. Plus you get food out of it. It's a win-win situation! Good luck, though. I hope you find something you enjoy.

French knitting: You need a wooden bobbin and four small nails. Knock the nails into one end of the bobbin equal distances apart. Push one end of the yarn through the hole in the centre of the bobbin to make a "tail", then loop it once around each nail to form the "stitch". You can use a large pin as the needle. wrap the free yarn around the nails and loop the "stitch" over it at each nail in sequence. Pull the tail of the yarn from the bottom of the hole to keep it straight. I could draw it better than I explain it, but, Yahoo! doesn't provide that function (yet?)
Another cheap craft is papier maché. All you need is old newspapers and some flour and water paste. You might have to buy some paint to finish the objects you make.

I do bead work. It is fairly easy and a few packages of beads can go a long way.

cross stitching is great and very simple to learn. Most patterns come with very simple instructions

You could try latch-hook kits. Once you finish the pattern, you can make it into a pillow or a blanket. My cousin enjoys it.
