After a bit of introspection, I find I may never have listened to a lot of mainstream music had it not been for popularity and public opinion behind them to begin with. I was always exposed to them, and simply learned to like them.

As much as I hated to admit it, yes. Still, I can't quite understand what is mainstream and alternative music at any time. Wasn't Britney Spears close to alt when all we listened before she splatted on us like a bird gift was grunge or whatever?
Being a 34 y/o geezer myself, I'm now deep into that "that-was-real-music-not-this-crap" thing; then again I still like things like Keane, or the Maroon Five albumMaryJanewhatever. But without the trascendence of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" and such.
Music nowadays reminds me more of the 80's one hit wonder scene than real albums.

Now, I most always got to know music from my friends, yes, we sat and watched MTV, when it looked more like today's VH1, so it had to do something with popularity. It's also true that if not for commercial radio, we would have never found out about "alternative rock" back then.

Music is a tribal thing I guess, so maybe the answer is: yes. Maybe.

I'm not too sure what mainstream music is, sorry, I'm probably the only one. If you're talking about the popular music, which Im guessing, I would say that I might like it, but not as much. I don't really know, but since I'm just exposed to it, I live with it. I love some of the old music. If that was the style today, I certainly wouldn't leave it for some of the popular music.

No, cause it would be the same music and would still suck.
