well conflict is a struggle between one or more characters...there is internal conflict (a charcter struggling with some sort of emotion) and there is external conflict (two or more forces that will fight each other, mentally or physically.). I would have to say that the importance would be that there would be no interesting points in the book. Would you want to read a story if there was no sort of struggle?
