The Declaration of Independance was an open letter of sorts, written at the direction of the Continental Congress, and eventually signed by all the members of it. Copies of the document were sent out to all the colonies. The document itself can be divided into five sections. The first section is the preamble, stating the overall purpose of the document. The second is a statement of political ideas held by the majority. The third section is a list of charges against King George III of England and the fourth section outlines the attempts to resolve the problems between Brtain and the colonies. The last section is the portion where the 13 colonies actually declare their independance of Great Britain and establish themselves as 13 independant states. It was the justification to the American public, Britain, and the rest of the world, for the decision to become independant of British rule, and was the statement of the reasons and principals for which the colonists fought.
The Declaration of Independance and the federal constitution which followed are the two most important documents in American history, and the Declaration of Independance is probably one of the greatest and most eloquent documents of all time. It inspired not only America's independant spirit at the time, but has continued to inspire other like minded peoples in the years since it was written. Although the manuscript itself, and reproductions can be a challenge to those of us unaccustomed to reading such flourished handwriting, there are plain type copies available. The document itself is short, but powerful in it's language and effect, and well worth reading if you want to understand the principals which guided our founders and have set the tone for America's independance ideals ever since.
