This will depend on whether you have a desktop or laptop machine. I wouldn't recommend taking a laptop apart, but for any computer with a case, I'd recommend taking the case off once a month, and blowing out any dust in there with a can of compressed air, which you can purchase at most office supply stores.

The reason: The two parts that suffer the most wear-and-tear in your computer are the ball bearings in the parts that spin constantly... the cooling fans (on the CPU and the power supply). Well, technically, your hard drive has ball bearings too, but you can't get at them so that's not really an issue.

Anyway the #1 cause of ball bearings wearing out too rapidly is dust getting in there. A layer of dust will also increase the heat in the machine, which can lead to failure in some of the circuitry.

You should be using compressed air on occasion to clean desktop computers. And keyboards on laptops. Remember to keep your machine turned off when cleaning. I found a great cleaner at walmart for the lcd screens, and it works great on my glasses too. It is around $6-$7

Ok, I am assuming you mean clean - as in files etc...not physically as in case, keyboard, screen or whatever. If you have some confidence and want to do it manually try this: http://www.better-spyware-removal.com/delete-spyware.html .
These same things apply for deleting unused files as they do for getting rid of spyware remnants.
Also, run a defrag of the hard drive and get hold of a registry clean program- do a search on the wb for one- it will get rid of any 'orphan' registry entries left behind by old programs etc..
Good luck.

Go to control panel, then click on performance and maintenance. Click on scheduled tasks and then pick a new one. I would do a disk defrag but not very often cause it wears down your drive.

There is a great article in last month's PC Gamer on how to clean your PC. If you know someone who has a subscription, ask to borrow it.
