loose stitches?

My husband's aunt gave me an old kenmore sewing machine..it works really well most of the time, but everynow and then it makes this funny grinding noise, and then the stitches are realllly loose....any ideas??

Sounds like it needs to be taken in to a sewing repair shop for a tune up.
