The metal guitar(IJX121) does NOT have a pickguard or a 5-way selector; it only has a 3-way for 2 humbucking pickups. it also has 24 frets. The bridge is a hardtail. The IJX40 guitar has 2 single coil and 1 humbucker. also, it has 22 frets. The bridge is a FAT10. I like black. :)

the IJX121 looks kinda cooler, but the IJX40 has more stuff on the guitar itself. check it out at a guitarcenter and try it if you can.
you can tell better if you actually play with it.

It depends on what kind of music you want to play. Ibanez is generally for harder rock like Korn and that type of sound. Fender is more for like Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beatles type sound. I got an Ibanez package to start out with about 5 years ago and I regret not getting a Fender Stratocaster, they're so awesome to play. Keep in mind that the amp gives you about 85-90% of the tone too and the rest is your style and guitar.

My fiance has the same Ibanez guitar that is Product #518876. Except his is red and white. I know for a fact that is the best guitar for what you have picked out. My fiance plays guitar/bass/drums. Good Luck with your search. If you need more help send us a message here or on myspace at Mr_and_Mrs_Serwop

Most stores will try to push those starter packs on you, but I've always heard that it's best to buy guitar and amp seperately. You can usually get a much higher quality instrument for the money that way.

I would go with the metal package. However, using musician's friend you can probably piece together the items you'll need (guitar, amp, tuner and gig bag) for the roughly the same cost, and get better quality.

For example...
guitar: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-51-Electric-Guitar?sku=519636
amp: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-VTone-GM108-15W-Modeling-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=480698
tuner: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Korg-CA30-Chromatic-Tuner?sku=210527
bag: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Road-Runner-Electric-Guitar-Gig-Bag?sku=541822
