a good thick NEW one is the best. It should not be too tight.
For extar safety use at least two forms of contraception eg the pill and a condom. Make sure you follow the instructions precisely and ENSURE YOU ARE SOBER AND NOT UNDER THE EFFECTS OF DRUGS other than the pill as you may do something you didn't mean to and the pill may not work.
Another option is abstinence. (no sex) although this is a really tough thing to stick with unless you're really ugly in personality as well as looks.
Ugly in only one aspect can usually still get sex. :)
Try the abstinence option until you are really in love rather than just in lust and you will probably find that the emotional rush makes the physical pleasure pale into insignificance, and the combined pleasure will blow your mind.

The brands are very similar in qualtity. I believe they are gov't tested for breakage, so any reputable brand should be okay.
I would avoid the "natural/lambskin" condoms, and make sure the model you choose is a good fit for your equipment. If it slides off or can't hold enough liquid, then its like you're not using anything.

about one third of men are allergic to the spermicide commonly found in condoms. i am, so i don't use spermicide lubricated condoms. if you have a latex allergy, they make neoprene and sheepskin condoms too.
as for brand, i've always trusted Lifestyles.
Trojan Ultra thins don't meet government standards according to consumer reports, and you might want to steer clear from any ultra thins.

any kind of condom that has spermicide on it would be a good one to use if you don't want a child right now, it will tell you on the box if it has spermicide on it. best of luck to you

Trogan condoms with spermicide. . .or just any condom with spermicide. It's like a little extra protection.

If you don't want a child, you don't have sex. EVERYTIME YOU HAVE SEX, YOU TAKE THAT RISK....REGARDLESS. No one single means of birth control (except abstinence) is 100%.
Now go do homework.
