The term nervous breakdown is no longer used. You are probably referring to a person's ability to cope with life's activities being overwhelmed by stressors.

You just can't handle your situation any longer so your nervous system just goes bizerk and your mind spins and you feel in complete anxiety. The reason for this is because one does not know their constitutional position. They think they are their body,mind, job, etc. They can't see beyond their Stilton. this term is constantly used in spite of the fact that it means many different things to many different people!
it does refer to people being overwhelmed by stressors and who cannot cope with it sufficiently. Then they "crack up" - colloquial term for entering into mental illness, it coudl resutl in neurosis or even psychosis.
