I am trying to get some information about adding a second hard disk drive to my Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I already have a 40GB drive installed, but I would like to add a 20GB drive also. Does this second drive need an operating system installed on it? How can I use this drive for additional storage?

This is very simple. Assuming that you have the regular 40/80 wire PATA controller and data cable. (Even simpler if it's SATA)

First, remove the original drive and ensure that the jumper is set to master. Replace it.

Second, ensure that the 20 G HDD jumper is set to slave. Connect it, preferably to the same data cable.

You do not NEED another OS on the second drive. To make the second drive usable, go to Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Computer Management|Storage|Disk Management. Use this tool to partition (even if the whole 20 G is one partition) and high level format. Right click on the drive and follow the directions.

Right-click on "My Computer" to see the two drives.

How do you save documents on this drive? File| File As|Choose that drive at the top of the screen| enter its name|Save.

To retrieve : Right click MY Computer| Double click on that drive|Double click on the item.

You can connect it and then format it when windows boots up by right-clicking on the new drive and select format. Windows may automatically detect the drive.
It will share the operating system with the one you currently have.

Dear Sir, You connect the DVD drive directly to the mother board sata. The hard discs may be connected to the mother board by taking new cable having another slave in the cable. the connection must be started from hard drive (C) then (D) lastly to mother board 2nd sata. Even I upgraded my computer with one more hard disc, as I explained above.
