I'm from Manchester. Just like many other cities, it has its good and bad areas. Its an ok place to live (not a pricy as London), the nightlife is great and alot of money has been invested into the city centre since the IRA bombings. The transport system is good with buses, trains, trams and a couple of coach stations and close to the M60. There is plenty to do in Manchester even for the most diverse minded people. As well as having a fresh new image in parts, it still has alot of history. As I said with all cities there are good and bad areas, Manchester is notorious for its gun culture in Longsite and Moss-side but you dont have to go anywhere near them, Manchester is a big place

I think Hereford is a nice city. I dont know about employment but it's not too big and has some wonderful scenery around. Norwich is very good as well and when the outer harbour goes in at Great Yarmouth which should be ready by 2008 then the area should get an economic boost. Norfollk is a lot flatter that Herfordshire but you have the broads and people live longer in Norfolk .

Leeds is very happening right now. I like Exeter too. York and Durham are beautiful cities. Manchester and Birmingham have had city centre makeovers and have lots of cultural activities. If you are looking for a smaller city Peterborough is on the way up, and Norwich is safe and attractive but a bit off the beaten track.
I think the best starting point would be what you can afford in terms of housing and what are the important transport routes for you/your job.

As Samuel Johnson said in the 18th century. "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life". London has so much on offer & if you need a nature hit then hop on a train or get a cheap charter flight to somewhere.

You'd have to go and visit them to see if it was for you. I love Bath but it is very expensive. I also think it depends how near airports etc. you want to be. Some of the suburbs of London are lovely and near nature such as Surrey and Kent - not really cities but lovely anyway.
